Designed and hosted by That’s Almost Funny, Not Your Normal Game Night is a recurring, immersive, invite-only experience rooted in storytelling, social deduction, and surprise. Drawing inspiration from the classic psychological game Mafia, each edition transports 16 guests into a narrative world that unfolds in three escalating acts. What begins as a casual evening becomes a full-scale transformation, of space, identity, and social dynamics.
Each Season, A New World
From the street lamp-lit streets of Mafia: Orange Grove to the shadowy woods of Werewolf Territory, and the futuristic command center of Astronauts vs Aliens, no two editions, no two nights, are the same. Guests arrive in costume with no knowledge of the storyline or mechanics- only the address and a dress code. Once inside, the story begins.
Craft cocktails flow as players receive their first secret roles. Over three rounds of gameplay, alliances are formed and shattered, abilities unlocked, and the stakes raised. Each game acts as a new mission, with custom sound design, lighting cues, and set transitions shaping the journey.
Built on Surprise, Fueled by Connection
This experience is part theatrical production, part interactive game, and part social experiment, designed for intimacy, immersion, and shared transformation. Each setting was crafted to suspend disbelief, whether that meant a cabin deep in the woods or a retro-futuristic spaceship bridge.
Lighting to simulate planetary movement. Captivating audio to mirror rising tension. A lightning strike to mark each revelation. Dynamic visuals evolving with each new round. I ran over 2,000 cues live while simultaneously serving as host, creative director, technical lead, producer, and narrative orchestrator.
The result was a live, high-wire act of world-building, gameplay, and real-time human chemistry.
What’s Next
Currently developing its fourth run, Not Your Normal Game Night will open to the public in 2026. Until then, it remains a word-of-mouth, invite-only affair, an immersive secret passed from player to player, one unforgettable night at a time.
